In this book “Khan Sahib Professor Qazi Fazl-i-Haque History of Punjabi Literature”, an effort has been made to present a complete history of Punjabi literature. This book presents the literary activities in Punjabi language, from the ancient times to the present, with historical perspective and order and in an as much as possible balanced, unbiased, and independent picture depicting the actual reality. In this book, covering all important known and unknown poets and writers in a large quantity and their available and rare literary works and books, authentic biographical descriptions, the details of their literary works and the rare and precious specimens of their poetry and prose are provided with research. Also, the commentaries on the literary activities and the appearances of new movements and literary progresses of each period, with historical background have been presented. Most of this material is not present in any of the book on the subject of history of Punjabi literature written in Punjabi, Urdu and English languages, published so far in Pakistan, India and other countries. From this point of view, this documentary book about Punjabi literature, illuminating the literary features, that had been hidden so far from our views, with research, presents a clearer and comprehensive picture of Punjabi literature, culture, society, history, values and real emotions and aspirations of the people of Punjab during different periods.
In describing this untold history of Punjabi literature and bringing ancient and modern, forgotten and hidden aspects upfront to the light, it has been attempted that authentic facts are presented with care and research. Only those dates and facts that have been found from authenticated resources are included in this book. And, the ones that are not reliable, or, the ones that are doubtful are avoided in the description. Similarly, authentic information is briefly presented, instead of lengthy traditional research and critical discussions and justifications, by making decisions based solely on facts and evidences. Also, the best characteristic and representative samples of Punjabi literature, from literary and criticism point of view, are selected after a detailed study from original available, as well as rare books, and are presented here, so these extremely valuable literary assets are preserved together in form of a book. And, it has been attempted to represent every important school of thought, literary movement and historical period of Punjabi literature during this process.
