A wonderful Book

I am almost at the end of this book. "Espionage of the Century" by Zahid Said is a fascinating book that not only delves into the complex world of espionage and intelligence-gathering but also serves as a biography of the author himself. Zahid Said, a former ambassador of Pakistan, provides a unique perspective on the subject matter by drawing on his own experiences in various countries and his interactions with the high officials. The book may be viewed in two perspectives; firstly focusing on the author’s career as a diplomat and his placements in different countries. Through anecdotes and personal insights, Said provides a rare behind-the-scenes look at the world of international diplomacy and sheds light on the challenges and opportunities that come with representing a country on the global stage. Secondly, the book probes into the world of espionage with respect to Pakistan. It’s a truthful account of the events that led to Pakistan nuclear journey from scratch to the final accomplishment. Ambassador Zahid successfully brings home the message that those at the helm of affairs through their decisions can make or break the living spirit of the nation. Overall, "Espionage of the Century" is a well-written and informative book that combines a biography of the author with a detailed analysis of espionage and intelligence-gathering. Whether you are interested in international diplomacy or national security issues, this book is definitely worth a read. Said's personal insights and experiences make this book a unique and valuable addition to the genre.

Very interesting reading! As the author decided to get it printed after his death, he is brutally honest about his life and experiences .... Good addition to library

I have read three forth of the book, and have found it extremely interesting. Besides many indoor events, the first hand account by Mr. Zahid of the drama involved in the transfer of nuclear material to Pakistan, especially the last minute advice of his wife to fulfill his promise to a friend while he was in two minds is perhaps the turning point of the century. First rate book.

Very interesting book containing historical events and author who was eye witness has revealed many details about such events which might never have come out and nation would have never known them. Well written and have used very simple language. By narrating the events as has occurred which shows his character and courage. It contains many wrong references about dates and years.

An Honest Memoir

A very honest and valuable memoir by an unsung hero who played a vital part in crisis. He has very candidly and humbly explained the events and experiences under testing times which were actually not only shaping our National Security paradigm but saved thousands of lives too. A book which should be a must read for all Foreign Services Officers and should read by all those researching for real history of Pakistan especially in the decades of 80s and 90s

An Ambassador's Life lived Well

Espionage of the Century: Memoirs by Ambassador Zahid Said

Fascinating memoirs of a life that took this Pashtun from the NWFP to Cambridge and Lincoln Inn, on to a distinguished diplomatic career with the Pakistan Foreign Service first on the legal side and eventually as an Ambassador. Along the way there are marvelous (and often very funny) accounts and interactions - good bad and uncomfortable - with the likes of Army Chief General Gul Hassan (with whom there was a notorious push 'n shove scuffle), Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto, General Zia Ul Haq (a bloodshot-eyed first meeting on the day after Bhutto's hanging and his later wailing out of guilt at the mosque in Medina), Benazir Bhutto, Asif Zardari (who was told to uncross his legs) and Nawaz Sharif (who sulked and was cross when the author advised him not to undertake a visit to the Al-Aqsa Mosque in Israel for ziarat). His foreign postings at the Netherlands (which proved to be a cloak and dagger account of smuggling documents and parts for Pakistan's nuclear program), Turkey, Senegal & three other West African countries (topless ladies on the beaches and at resorts), Kuwait (took on the mantle of a life saver for the Pakistani community when the Iraq invasion took place and emergency evacuations had to be made), Spain & Jordan. Written with great humour and also rightfully scathing about a number of sycophant Babu types at the FO ("the snake pit") who were hell bent on causing mischief. He mentions his family and the great friendships he maintained throughout his life. It was a life full of grace and generosity which was extremely well lived. Champagne Cheers!!
