It will always, even after it has crumbled beyond habitation and become another Nineveh or Ephesus, find someone who feels inspired enough to chronicle its past and to leave for future historians a personal reconstruction however partial of its identity.

Perhaps the most pedantic of its historians to date must remain Syad Muhammad Latif, whose book Lahore: Its History, Architectural remains and Antiquities, published in 1892, represents an almost magisterial summation of facts known about the city up to the moment of his writing. The conscientiousness with which he marshaled those facts and the manner of his presentation was not surprising, considering his training as an Extra Judicial Assistant Commissioner in Gurdaspur. Dr M. Baqir's Lahore: Past and Present came sixty years later, in 1952, and although he too derived his sources from earlier accounts and guidebooks, he broadened his references to include vernacular publications about Lahore.

Since then there have been a number of other publications, each providing modern readers with a different vision of Lahore. My earlier book Lahore: Illustrated Views of the 19" Century for example, presented a panorama of Lahore seen through the eyes of nineteenth century visitors, primarily artists both foreign and local, both professional and amateur. I included also some work of early photographers such as Dr J. McCosh whose calotypes of the Badshahi Masjid and Maharaja Ranjit Singh's samadhi are as significant to the history of photography as the historic monuments they depict.

The only justification I can offer for compiling a second book on Lahore (beyond a filial affection for my home-city) is that during the intervening ten years since the appearance of my first book, there has been a perceptible, productive response among social historians, archivists, bureaucrats and citizens alike, a palpable and growing concern with the preservation, restoration and if nothing else documentation of Lahore's unique image. Another unexpected audience that has developed since the appearance of my earlier book is one of individual collectors, many of whom have been fortunate in acquiring early prints, watercolours and lithographs of Lahore, as my wife Shahnaz and I had done when we began collecting more than twenty-five years ago.

Prominent amongst them, and certainly the most forthcoming, has been Mr Robert Scoales, a retired librarian who despite being a Scot lives in Ealing (U.K.), and whenever he is in Lahore, takes rooms (usually No. 3) in the Orient Hotel on McLeod Road. From there, dressed in the superficial camouflage of a white shalwar-kameez, he makes forays into the streets and alleys of Lahore, looking out for anything that will enhance his already formidable knowledge about the architecture and topography of Lahore. If there is a letterbox still in use that carries the initials 'VR', of Queen Victoria before she was declared Queen Empress in 1877, Bob is sure to stumble across it. (He did. It stands in the street adjacent to King Edward Medical College.) He scours the footpaths and bookshops in search of unusual books or ephemera about old Lahore. And when he returns to Ealing, he continues his search, scanning the catalogues of specialist bookshops and postcard fairs for any material about Lahore. Bob has not only assembled an enviable collection of such valuable material but also generously agreed to its use in this publication. He carried much of it over on successive visits to be examined by me and to be scanned for this publication. Long before the first European explorers ventured into this high altitude plateau, vague knowledge of its existence was current in the plains of the Indian subcontinent. Thence the word had been carried by the nomadic Gujjar cow herders who fattened their animals on the rich summer grasses of this vast uninhabited tableland. The Gujjar accounts wafted from person to person to become a confused tale of a plateau stretching flat, unbroken and treeless from the mountains north of the capital of Kashmir all the way to the deserts of Tartary. The myth was finally broken in the 1830s.

The earliest Europeans, both Britons, William Moorcroft and Godfrey Thomas Vigne, were over-awed by its sheer desolation. Both also noted that Deosai was inhabited by large numbers of Tibetan brown bear. Though the elusive snow leopard, fox, wolf and ibex prowl across it, it was the easily seen bear that became the signature species on the plateau.

But over the years all was not well for the bear. It became commonly believed that a diet of some of the bear’s body parts could cure sexual impotence, or that its body fat rubbed on arthritic joints could rejuvenate them no matter how worn out they might be. The result was a slow but systematic purging of the species.

By the late 1980s, only a handful of bears survived. That was when the protagonists of this book began the conservation effort to bring back this precious animal from the brink of extinction. Their efforts paid and there has been an increase in the bear population. But even though programme is now in the hands of the government, the bears still look ahead to an uncertain future.

Deosai: Land of the Giant tells the story of Deosai, its geography and history as well as the heroic effort of bear conservation and the establishment of a national park on the plateau. From their base in Shigar valley (north of Skardu), these unknown mountaineers, actually shepherds and hunters forever in search of newer pastures and more game for the fleshpots, struck out to the northwest into the web of glaciers of the central Karakoram Range. Off to the east, the Karakoram Pass had been traversed since before the advent of the modern era, and it would have been known to the Baltis that if they went where no man had gone before, then over some high glaciated pass they would meet up with the old north-south route over the Karakoram Pass connecting Yarkand with Leh and Srinagar. And so the Muztagh Pass, 5300 metres high, was discovered. After several hundred years of remaining in use, decaying glaciers made it increasingly difficult for laden caravans of yaks and Bactrian camels to negotiate the glacier. The pass was abandoned in or about 1780. In the early years of the following century the Raja of Baltistan ordered reconnaissance for a new pass. The result was the opening of another route about 16 km west of the old one that European explorers dubbed the New or West Muztagh Pass. Perhaps she felt they were too intimate or that he would not approve (he was less than enthusiastic about his own letters being published earlier) or perhaps it was simply a way to assuage her grief at the passing away of her closest companion, the man who had been at her side (more or less, prison spells notwithstand- ing) for close to 50 years. While they have not achieved anywhere near the notoriety that Faiz’s letter’s published in his own Urdu translation as ‘Saleebain mere darichay main (‘Crucifixes in my window’) achieved, these letter have a unique place of their own in the time honored canon of ‘prison literature’.

They are a testament to a young mother’s struggle against tremendous odds to survive and prevail. Separated from her family and from the place of her birth, Alys never expected that within a few years of her marriage and with two young daughters, she would also be separated from the man she loved and her only source of livelihood. When the unthinkable happened though, and Faiz was, literally, hauled off in the middle of the night, Alys did the only thing she could. True to her British spirit she pulled up her socks and got to work. She joined Faiz’s paper The Pakistan Times as a columnist, cycling back and forth to the office (their car had to be sold to pay living expenses), juggling her meagre income to keep a roof over her children’s’ head and fighting forcefully and tirelessly to clear her husband’s name and
get him released from prison. They are by turn, funny, touching, sad and inspiring. Those who knew Alys only as ‘Mrs. Faiz’ might be surprised to find passages in the letters that show a poetic side to her that was not readily apparent when meeting her face to face such as this passage from a letter from early on in Faiz’s imprisonment in 1951: “The weather cools day by day, and now a rich wind is blowing and the moon, half-eaten, still shines. I know it is the same with you and this gladdens my heart. Of course there are a few unpleasant hours in between but the dust is laid low and, as you say, we are now on the last lap. Dear heart, the days will soon be over, days of wishing the time away, and who knows the tears may be patched, and the torn places hidden, and then I tell myself what we have missed we can surely make up, by giving to our girls the joy, the happiness, and fun which is their right, and the right of all others too. The new nation of Pakistan was still finding its way and the decade of the 1950s was a particularly unsettled one. After the assassination of Prime Minister Liaqat Ali Khan in 1951, the country entered a long period of political upheaval which eventually culminated in its first military government in 1958. Faiz was incarcerated in 1951 and released in 1955. By the time he came out, his beloved Lahore and Pakistan itself had changed beyond recognition. The euphoria of independence had long evaporated replaced by a funereal gloom and despondency about the future.

Alys’s letters reflect some of the turmoil taking place in society while Faiz was in prison. While she observes most of this thru the lens of her domestic concerns (prices of essential grocery items, concerns for the safety of her young daughters etc), she was also politically astute and this shows in her comments to Faiz.

This new edition of ‘Dear Heart’ has been updated and corrected and some editorial comments have been added for clarity. The Mathnawi was begun around 1258 at the suggestion of a disciple, Husam al-Din, who acted as amanuensis, and though the final story is incomplete, composition probably ceased a while before Rumi’s death in 1273. The six books of the poem amount to more than 25,000 verses. Loosely structured and at times metrically rough and colloquial in style, the work pursues its way through hundreds of stories, drawn from many literary and other sources and used to illustrate the main theme, man’s predicament in his search for God.

Nicholson’s critical edition is based on the oldest known manuscripts, including the earliest, dated 1278, and preserved in the Mawlana Museum at Konya. They were found after Alys passed away in a very very decrepit sort of state. They were restored and we decided to publish them as they were in Faiz's own handwriting as facsimiles and then the text next to it. We also decided to pay a visit to the cells where he was incarcerated from 1951 to 1955. And this wonderful volume is a record of his letters. It's also filled with photographs of the spaces in which he paced during those years when he was in prison and also the garden which he laid out in what is now Sahiwal jail and which carries a tablet outside which says "Ahata e Faiz Ahmad Faiz". So it's a documentation of very difficult years. It has photographs that were with him, of his children, the drawings sent by his children to him, the letters, the telegrams, some of the record of the Rawalpindi conspiracy case, which is what kept him in prison. The "Old Lahore" of which Colonel Goulding writes is mostly of later date than this, and much of his recollections deal with things of a comparatively recent past. But our memories of what has happened even in our own times are very short-lived, and Colonel Goulding has done a great service to lovers of Lahore by placing on paper the information he has given us, more especially that relating to the European community stationed in this place. He has always taken a special interest in the early documents of our Government offices, and he has himself, by his long connection with the Volunteer movement and with the official and municipal work of Lahore, played for many years a prominent part in the social and official life of the place. The role of clothes, books, jewels, drugs, animals, etc., are elucidated. We learn how men and women of the court travelled, how a daily supply of ice was achieved, and the pastimes courtiers enjoyed. A remarkable world of connoisseurship in the arts is explained, and frequently, but not too frequently, Schimmel draws on her unrivalled store of poetry to reinforce a point. The Mughals left many writings of their own, as did their courtiers and Western visitors to the court. Schimmel uses these voices to guide us through their world. Throughout, she deploys her sources with a sensitivity and sureness of touch that came from a profound knowledge of, and respect for, the Mughals and their achievement. D. 1589) he proceeded from that city to Beejapoor, and was introduced to the prince who then filled the throne of the latter kingdom. That monarch devoted much of his time to the study of history, and frequently heaped favours on this author, urging him to complete the object which had ever been uppermost in his mind.

In order to effect this end, he was directed to obtain historical works from all quarters; and in a short time a vast collection of materials was brought together and minutely examined. The desire, therefore, of becoming the historian of the rise of the Mahomedan power in India more and more filled the writer's mind. He, in consequence, began to arrange his materials; and having, in the course of time, brought his task to a close, he presented it in the year 1018 (A. But Alys has also had to live through some extraordinary times. These have ranged from life with a hounded husband held for varying spells in distant captivity to days in a building flat in Beirut that became a prime target of Israeli bombing. Others would tend to be expansive about such traumatic experiences. Alys takes them in stride. She writes of them matter-of-factly. The loneliness and the pain are not flaunted, they are fought back, and they come across the more devastatingly for that. She is true not only to her English upbringing, but also to the literary tradition. Readers may feel disappointed that in this, the first compilation of her writings (the other, ‘Dear Heart’, consisted of her letters to Faiz when he was in prison), there is almost nothing about her memories of Faiz or even of the early challenge of adapting to life in Faiz’s country. This book particularly covers that segment of the history of Murree that pertains to the British period about which very little was known before. The author is not very happy with the affairs of Murree of today. He silently protests the dismantling of old mansions, hotels, clubs, and promenades for giving way to ugly monotonous modern constructions of cement, steel and concrete. He is sincerely worried about the vanishing landmarks of the historical vista of this city, the peace, calm and serenity of its environment which once prevailed here during all seasons. No doubt, he is nostalgic about the beauty of Murree of pre-Partition days but his account of this city is neither hyperbolic nor does it lack authenticity. He has used all the original sources – as much as he could lay his hand on, to unfold the story of the gradual building of a city and the transformation of a ridge of the Pir Panjal into a charming hill station of the British Raj.

Professor Khan knows this city like the palm of his hand. He has been visiting this city and residing here off and on since his childhood going back to the early days after Independence. He has been working on this book for more than a decade. Being a frequent visitor here he has witnessed all the phenomenal and traumatic changes which Murree has undergone from a small Reserve of British Officers of pre-Independence days to be the Queen of all the hill stations in Pakistan - as it is today. Besides, he is an avid reader. There is hardly a book, a research paper, or a popular article on or about any aspect of Murree that has escaped his attention while writing this book. He has thoroughly explored the archival record of the local Municipal Committee, which came into existence in 1867. He also interviewed some of the eminent senior citizens who had sufficient knowledge of the old Murree and its important landmarks - now either already vanished or seriously endangered to disappear. He also made an arduous journey to India and visited the hill station of Dalhousie of undivided Punjab to see as to how this contemporary hill station had fared after Independence. In India, he also had a chance to meet some of the families who had formerly lived in Murree before migrating to India. He recorded their reminiscences about their former residence in this city. With the help of such an experience the author was able to fill up certain gaps in the history of Murree of the British Raj which mere reading of numerous books, research papers and scrutiny of archival records would not have made it possible.

“… With this book a serious effort has been made to address the need for a historical account of Murree and its environs. While the city undergoes feverish building activity and is set for a complete makeover, we envisage an influx of visitors. Indeed, this is no erroneous belief. To make the person’s life a part of the larger life of their times. This is what I have understood of Karl Marx’s method of ‘historical materialism’, a philosophy and an ideology which guided Faiz throughout his life. It helped that Faiz sahib lived in such ‘interesting times’ as the Chinese curse goes. The First World War, the Great Depression, India’s struggle for independence, the Second World War, the creation of Pakistan (and its later dismemberment into Pakistan and Bangladesh), Faiz lived through them all. He also tried, to the best of his ability, to engage with these world issues and, in the process, became one of its most eloquent spokespersons for a whole generation, especially in the Indo-Pak subcontinent. The cataclysmic events following the fall of the Berlin Wall and the dissolution of his beloved USSR happened a few years after he died, but I suspect he foresaw at least some of what was to come. And unlike what the cheerleaders of Capitol predicted following the destruction of the ‘Red Menace’, the world of the 21st century has only become more polarized, more dangerous and more uncertain.

Governments come and go, so do wars and empires. Emperors, kings and presidents, too, rise and fall with the times but through it all humankind’s desire to rise to greater nobility and perfection persists. And poets, the ‘unacknowledged legislators of the world’ as Shelley said, are our guides and fortune-tellers. They peer into the human heart and see what lies in its depths, they can discern what lies beyond the heavens, and this is why they have always been revered and feared in equal measure. It is essential for a poet to understand and reflect something universal about the human condition if they are to rise above the mundane. And great poetry requires much more. The ability to perceive and sing about the universality of all human life, both throughout history as well as in the context of the cosmos. And if one can wed this depth and breadth of vision to Love (with a capital ‘L’), as Faiz did, one can perhaps begin to touch greatness.

But this is an endless endeavor, as is the human struggle itself. Faiz wrote about this repeatedly. One human being, no matter how talented or hardworking, is in the end just one link in a vast chain stretching back through the mists of time all the way to the origin of Life itself. Ultimately we are all, as Newton remarked, ‘standing on the shoulders of giants’. Indirectly, this is a proof of
the “vitality” of a methodology which gives priority to the three-dimensional
information that only the excavation of an urban centre can provide, and which
IsMEO (now ISMEO) has always considered as the specificity of its
archaeological missions throughout in the world.
After 36 years of campaigns (not counting those by Giorgio Stacul in the 1970s),
Bīr-koṭ-ghwaṇḍai, the identification of which with the ancient town of Bazira-
Beira/Vajīrasthāna is now certain, can be considered, together with Sirkap, the
most crucial excavated settlement site in the North-West of the Indo-Pakistani
Subcontinent. We are pleased that this has happened not only for the work of two
of the Authors of this volume, two distinguished ISMEO scholars, but also
through an international collaboration that is outlined by the introductory words
of Cameron A. Petrie and further demonstrated by the many co-authors whose
names appear on the front page of this volume.
Although the site has been regularly published, for the pottery material we had to
wait more time than planned originally. In fact, the tragic earthquake that hit
northern Pakistan in 2005 had a dramatic effect on the pottery collections
conserved in the two godowns of the ISMEO Italian Mission at Saidu Sharif (see
below the Introduction to the volume). This circumstance would have only partly
affected the possibility of homogeneously integrating the descriptive data. As
matter of fact, the complete dataset had been brought to the Mission headquarters
at the IsIAO before the event occurred.
Unfortunately, though, following the dissolution of IsIAO by the Italian
Government authorities due to lack of funds (IsIAO was the Institute on which the
Italian Mission had depended from 1995 to 2012) the offices of the various
archaeological missions kept in Rome were vacated. The following numerous
changes of venue affected the archaeological deposits before a temporary place
was found in the storerooms of the Museo Nazionale di Arte Orientale ‘Giuseppe
Tucci’, now in the Museo delle Civiltà (EUR, Rome). Meanwhile a good
proportion of the pottery records were lost. The event had a particular effect on
the records of the inscribed sherds, as narrated in the introductory note of the
dedicated chapter.
The present volume adds to other published in the series ACT-Field School
Project Reports and Memoirs from the well-deserved publisher Sang-e-Meel
Publications, Lahore. In more recent decades, with the fast pace of work and heavy burden of responsibilities, this tradition has been gradually lost. The last gazetteer of Lahore was compiled in 1915-16 and so attempting to do so in 2022 was a major challenge that we have attempted to overcome as best as we could. Compiling a gazetteer of Lahore district in 2022 was therefore a Herculean task as the city has transformed significantly in the last several decades.

We began the task of compiling this gazetteer with trips to the bookstores and a relentless knocking on the doors of administrative departments to gather the required information. In most cases, we had to ask again, and again, and again. In a city rushing towards the future at a breakneck speed of ‘development’, very few want to stop and take stock of what was and what happened. I am grateful to Fatima Arshad, Assistant Commissioner (Under Training) Lahore who embraced the project wholeheartedly since its inception and literally worked day and night on it, bringing it to fruition.

As we engaged local historians and experts in the compilation of information, we still felt adrift putting together in administrative terms what is essentially a multifaceted district about which however much is written will remain partial and insufficient. Dr Sara Zubair very kindly assisted us in selecting the most important developments, in writing, editing, drafting and re-drafting the manuscript, in keeping us on track and ensuring that it sees the light of day. It is no exaggeration that the output is in large part a blend of the combined efforts of Ms Arshad and Dr Zubair, supplemented by the contributions of various experts and departments.

From the Deputy Commissioner’s Office, I am grateful to the Deputy Commissioner, M. Umer Sher Chattha who supported the project fully and monitored its development closely. My colleagues, Touqeer Ilyas Cheema (Additional Deputy Commissioner - Revenue), Dr Mujtaba Arfat Khan (Additional Deputy Commissioner- General) and Shahid Abbas Kathia (Additional Deputy Commissioner- Finance & Planning), ably filled many lacunae and ensured the timely and accurate provision of information. Assistant Commissioners of the Lahore district, Sonia Sadaf, Zeeshan Nadeem, Sufyan Dilawar, Qurat ul Ain Zafar, Adnan Rashid, Mian Hamid Rashid, Asif Hussain, Laraib Aslam and Izhar ul Haq Bajwa provided us with the required information and supported the project whenever needed. Anwer Sajid, Office Superintendent, Imran Maqbool, Public Relations Officer, Syed Ali Murtaza, System Network Administrator, Saul Yousaf and Rana Salman from my office, Farooq Khan, DC Office Photographer, Atif Aslam, PA to ADCR, all worked tirelessly on this project

A number of experts helped us with the gazetteer including Dr Ali Usman Qasmi, LUMS, who guided us with the materials on the city and also linked us with a local historian, Faizan Abbas Naqvi who has made immeasurable contributions to the project. Prof. Ayesha Jalal, Tufts University, kindly shared her advice and allowed us to use exquisite paintings of her late brother, Shahid Jalal, on Lahore. Abdul Majid Sheikh generously allowed us to reproduce material from his prolific work on the city. Dr Nadine Zubair graciously assisted us with the historical research on Lahore. Ms Saman Rai helped us with the research on the cultural heritage of the district. I am grateful to Omar Hayat Gondal for the sections on Badami Bagh and the economy of Lahore.

After the first draft was ready, Mr Abdullah Khan Sumbal, Additional Chief Secretary Punjab, and Capt. Muhammad Usman Younis, Commissioner Lahore Division, gave us precious feedback and suggestions for improvement. I am grateful to both for their time and valuable input.

I know what we have achieved is a partial success. What we write will never be a complete account of Lahore; anyone who lives in the city only glimpses shades and partial views and perhaps encompassing its full reality is no longer possible. Where possible, we have tried to give details of public services being provided by the administration and the ways to access the same. Unlike the colonial gazetteers that served as an instrument of governance, we intend it to be primarily a handbook and guide for the citizen. Foremost, this is an attempt to engage, to document and to understand the transitions this city is going through, put together with as much dedication as we could muster. Had we searched for perfection, we would have been working forever, therefore I shall rest the pen and humbly say: whatever good we have achieved here is from God, the errors remain my own.

Dr Atiyab Sultan
Additional Deputy Commissioner HQ Lahore

----------------------------------------------------------

There is a certain audacity in attempting to write a city. Not just any city, but Lahore, the City district. There will always be others who are infinitely more knowledgeable, nuanced or eloquent; others with a greater claim to the city. Yet a cursory glance at its history (or histories) will reveal countless claimants, and those are only the loud, the visible, or the powerful: there are millions of others that have made and remade the city, and continue to do so without acknowledgement. To therefore have had the opportunity to learn more and say something about this city that I have called home, is an honour. To assume that any justice has been done to the sheer kaleidoscope that it is, and the multitudes that share it, would be hubris.

This process has revealed just how little one truly knows – not just about the temporal and spatial entity that is Lahore, but also the intangible and ephemeral. The writers, artists, photographers, chroniclers, and administrators, whose work fills these pages have done their part to reveal facets of the city to us. I am truly grateful to those whose names have been referenced as well as to the numerous anonymous, uncredited others – including unsuspecting, un-named passers-by who just happened to get captured in photographs. While a great deal of research has gone into this publication, the gazetteer’s purpose is something other than a conventional understanding of research, and certain liberties have been taken. Some texts have been quoted verbatim, and it is important to clarify that the purpose is not to take credit for the authors’ work, but to present the authors’ work as their own rather than tamper with it. At the same time, many important personalities, places, perspectives, and events have also been left out, for which an apology must be made, although it is abysmally insufficient.

Ultimately, I hope that readers find the gazetteer informative and interesting, and that any gaps therein serve as inspiration to extend our understanding of Lahore further.

Sara Zubair
Educationist, Writer, Flâneuse

Title: Gazetteer of the Lahore District 2022
Author: Deputy Commissioner Lahore - Government of the Punjab
Editors: Dr. Atiyab Sultan, Sara Zubair
Subject: Lahore, History
ISBN: 969353445X
Language: English
Number of Pages: 324
Year: 2022

Title: Kuch Dil Ne Kaha - Chalees Baras Baad Ek Beti ki Sargoshian
Author: Moneeza Hashmi
Translator: Nayyar Rubab
Subject: Memoirs, Letters
ISBN: 9693535766
Language: Urdu
Year of Publication: 2024
Number of Pages: 197

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0119/4776/9918/files/KuchDilneKahaMoneezaHashmiSang-e-meelPublications-FrontTitle-Copy.jpg?v=1708093446
mehr-o-wafa-ke-baab-ali-madeeh-hashmi
Mehr o Wafa ke Baab - Ali Madeeh Hashmi
Title: Mehr o Wafa ke Baab - Faiz Ahmed Faiz ki Sawaneh Hayaat
Author: Ali Madeeh Hashmi
Translator: Nayyar Rubab
Subject: Biography
ISBN: 9693535758
Language: Urdu
Year of Publication: 2024
Number of Pages: 360
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0119/4776/9918/files/Mehrowafakebaad-AliMadeehHashmi-Sang-e-meelTitle.jpg?v=1711018103
hidden-caliphate-waleed-ziad
Hidden Caliphate: Sufi Saints beyond the Oxus and Indus - Waleed Ziad

2022, Winner of the Albert Hourani Book Award, the most prestigious award in “Middle East Studies through the Middle East Studies Association”
2023, Winner of the AIPS (American Institute of Pakistan Studies) Book Prize
2023, Shortlisted for British Association for South Asian Studies Book Prize
2022, Shortlisted for Bloomsbury Pakistan Book Prize

In a pathbreaking book, Waleed Ziad tells the story of Central and South Asia through the lens of transnational Sufi networks from the 18th century onwards, offering a vital new perspective on a region long understood only through European imperial histories. Having conducted fieldwork across Afghanistan, Pakistan, and Central Asia, in 140 towns and villages, often living with religious communities in the Afghan-Pakistan border areas, Ziad shows how Asia was knit together by networks of Sufis centered in the region’s chief cities, notably Peshawar and Bukhara. These Sufis, known as the Naqshbandi-Mujaddidis, fused Persian, Arabic, Turkish, and Indian literary traditions, mystical virtuosity, popular religious practices, and urban scholasticism in a unified yet flexible expression of Islam.
